JAKARTA: Thousands of Indonesian Muslims dressed in white rallied outside the presidential palace in Jakarta on Wednesday to press the government to ban the Ahmadiyya sect, regarded as heretical by many followers of Islam.
Fears of a hardline backlash against the Ahmadiyya have grown since the government of the world's most populous Muslim country issued a ministerial decree this month that stopped short of banning the sect, but warned that followers could face five years in jail for tarnishing religion.
Shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest), the protesters at the rally organised by Forum Umat Islam demanded an outright ban on the Ahmadiyya as the sect's teachings deviated from fundamental Islamic tenets.
